Chiropractic offices across the country have long been places where we go to soothe aches, realign our bodies and generally take care of our joints and muscles in a holistic way. A Chiropractor is an expert at using movements and pressure in strategic areas that encourage the body to heal itself. Chiropractic adjustments for infants are not as common a practice, but there are just as many health benefits to an infant as there are to adults. We are going to break down some of those health benefits below and discuss why there are benefits in the long term for your baby.
1) Post Birth Recovery
The process of birth put tremendous pressure on the mother’s body as well as the baby’s. Whether your birth was natural or c-section there can be tension built up in the babies spine as well as suppressed nerve function throughout the body. What most new parents don’t know is that spine tension and suppressed nerve function actually cause those newborn symptoms most parents view as inevitable such as colic, reflux, and sleeping abnormalities. A mild adjustment to the spine will be able to ease some of the stress your baby is subjected to through birth.
2) Relief from Colic symptoms
Just saying the word ‘Colic’ can send any new parent into a cold sweat. We have all heard the stories of family or close friends being up all night with an infant crying out in pain. Having a colicy baby is a stressful and heartbreaking situation to cope with as a new parent, but there are some solutions via chiropractic adjustment that may be able to provide some respite.
Colic in its simplest form can be described as an immature digestive system being unable to process food in a short enough time frame to prevent gas and indigestion. What a chiropractor will do is perform gentle movements on the spine and torso to increase nerve function in the gastrointestinal system. The goal being to restore the natural rhythm of your baby’s intestinal system so gas is not allowed to build up and cause cramping.
3) Relaxing a fussy baby
When your baby is crying, especially as a newborn it can be fairly simple to identify what the need could be. As your baby gets older, however, they are growing at a rate that is faster than any other point in their lives. What that translates to is headaches, muscle cramps or spasms, and irritability which can cause your baby to erupt in tears for seemingly no reason.
Once again, a chiropractic adjustment will ease the pressure on your baby’s spine which is responsible for the vast majority of discomfort. Most parents notice a marked improvement just from a couple of sessions.
Being a new parent can be one of the scariest and rewarding times of your life, and so much your child’s development will depend on the health of their spine, nervous system, and immune system. Let LifeGiving Chiropractic take this journey with you and provide you with the utmost attention and care.
